Lab vocab 2

Seropositive and seronegative: labels on a lab report

Seropositive usually means a test found antibodies above a cutoff. Seronegative means it did not. The cutoff is set by the test and the study.

The short version

  1. The words describe a lab cutoff, not a whole person.
  2. Cutoffs differ between tests.
  3. Eligibility rules that use serostatus are study-specific.

01Above or below a line

Each assay has a threshold. Results on one side are called positive; the other side negative.

02Why studies care

Some studies need people who already have antibodies; others need people who do not.

03Changing over time

A later test can differ from an earlier one. Timing matters.

04Not medical advice

Only a clinician or the study team can explain a personal result.
